What Color Should My Fence Be?
Choosing the color of your residential fence is just as important as choosing the right colors for the exterior of your home. These decisions have a huge impact on the overall appearance of your home. The first step that you must take is to decide if you want a painted fence or a stained fence.
What is the difference between paint and stain?
This may seem like a trivial question, but it is an important one to fully understand. Paint is a material that is going to completely conceal the raw color of the fence material. Stain is a semi-transparent material that will allow a portion of the original color of the material (primarily wood) to show through. If the proper coating is selected and applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, paint and stain will both last for a long time. Choosing between these two different types of finishes is an important step in the design process of your fence. We’d recommend that you take time to think through this decision.
Are the colors on the exterior of your home coordinated with the interior?
Many homeowners have taken the extra step of ensuring that all of the colors on the interior and exterior of their home are all coordinated, but this obviously isn’t the case 100% of the time. Regardless of the color schemes that flow throughout your home, the color of your fence is an important factor to consider because it is going to be a very visible part of your property.
Paint and stain are both available in a wide variety of colors that can add to the overall look of your home and property. When making this important decision, you should consider several things, such as:
- The color scheme on the exterior of your home
- The color scheme in the interior of your home
- How do these colors look from the outside looking in?
- How do these colors look from the inside looking out?
Once you have had time to take note of all of the details, you will be much better equipped to make the right decision in regards to the color and finish of your fence. The experts at Cole Fence can help guide you through this process.
Are all fence types available in colors?
This is a tricky question because some types of fencing are generally produced in a couple of colors. For example, chain-link fencing is available in the standard galvanized finish. It is also available in black (vinyl coated). Vinyl fencing is available in several colors (depending on the manufacturer). Wood fencing can be painted or stained in a nearly endless assortment of colors.
What about chain-link fencing?
What if you decide that you want a chain-link fence that is colored?
If you truly desire a chain-link fence that is a color besides galvanized or vinyl coated black, you can certainly have your fence painted. This would be a tedious and costly venture, but it can certainly be accomplished.
Should I leave my wood fence unfinished?
If you have decided to go with a wooden fence, you have the option to leave it unfinished (i.e. natural). This is only recommended if you have selected pressure treated lumber as your fencing material because untreated lumber will start to rot in a relatively short time. If you choose not to paint or stain your pressure treated fence, you should, at a minimum, apply a water sealant to it which will protect the wood from the weather, UV rays, etc.
